How to Hide Marks Left by Old Cabinet Handles
Replacing cabinet handles but worried about old holes, impressions or colour differences? Learn how cover plates, wider handle feet and the correct fixing centres can help you achieve a neat result.

When you replace cabinet handles, old screw holes, impressions or colour differences may become visible. This does not necessarily mean repainting or replacing the doors. With careful measurements and the right hardware, you can often achieve a beautifully finished result.
Start by measuring the holes and marks
Measure the fixing centres from the centre of one screw hole to the centre of the other. Then measure the full area affected by marks or colour differences. The new handle needs to fit the holes and cover the area you want to hide.
A paper template cut to the stated dimensions is a simple way to check the coverage before ordering several handles.
Hide old holes with cover plates
Cover plates sit between the handle and the cabinet front. They are a practical way to conceal old holes, impressions and minor damage while creating a coordinated look.
- Nickel creates a timeless, neutral finish.
- Black adds a clear contrast that suits modern kitchens.
- Brass brings warmth; unlacquered brass develops a natural patina over time.
Choose handles with wider feet
A handle with wider feet may cover the marks without a separate plate. Always compare the width and length of the feet with the affected area. A wider handle only helps if it fully covers both the holes and the visible marks.
To use the existing screw holes, the new handle must have the same fixing centres. If the measurements differ, an old hole may still need filling or a larger cover plate.
When should the holes be repaired?
If the marks extend beyond the new hardware, or you want to move the handle, the holes may need filling and the surface touching up. Test on an inconspicuous area and follow the cabinet manufacturer’s advice for paint and finish.
Try one before ordering several
Order a sample handle or use an accurately measured paper template. Check the fit, fixing centres and appearance while opening the door. This reduces the risk of ordering the wrong model.
