Metal handles

Kitchen handles made of metal are probably the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of kitchen handles. Since the 1990s, metal handles have been the obvious choice in Scandinavian kitchens, drastically replacing the previous trend of wooden handles. However, even in earlier decades, we have seen a lot of metal in kitchens. Cup handles in metal were very popular around the turn of the 19th to 20th century, and during the mid-20th century, stainless steel ticka handles with latch and drawer handles became common, alongside those with teak grip strips in their pastel-colored kitchens.

From plastic to metal

In the same era, plastic became a trendy product as plastic factories developed after World War II, leading to the introduction of plastic in kitchens. Knobs entirely made of plastic, self-adhesive towel hooks in plastic, and even metal handles with plastic washers became bestsellers in the kitchen industry. Plastic and grip strips remained popular during the 1970s, and then gave way to more wooden products in the 1980s. However, in the 1990s, metal details made a comeback and dominated the market, resulting in metal being the natural choice of handle in the Nordic countries today.

Classic t-foot handles and bow handles

There are two timeless metal handles that most people have encountered at some point, whether they realized it or not. These are t-foot handles and bow handles. T-foot handles are the classic tubular fittings that have overhangs on both sides of the feet, just like the letter T. This handle is a true classic and is often found in rental apartments and public spaces. At It’s Design, we have t-handles in many different lengths, and the t-handle is highly appreciated for its good grip, accessibility, and stylishness.

Modern design and versatility

Bow handles are exactly what they sound like – a handle shaped like a bow. The fitting begins and ends with the foot next to the door or drawer front and has a soft rounded form as a grip. Bow handles are considered more modern and minimalist, with a cleaner design than the t-foot. Over the years, bow handles have evolved and are now available in many different center-to-center measurements, both tubular models and flat on top but rounded underneath for a soft grip. At It’s Design, you will find several models of bow handles in black, antique, aluminum, and stainless steel, all to suit your style and needs.
