What is a pull-out shelf for kitchen cabinets?
A pull-out shelf is a shelf or basket mounted on runners at the bottom of the cabinet. When the shelf is pulled out, you get a clear overview of the contents and can easily reach everything stored at the back. It is a smart alternative to fixed shelves, where items often end up hidden at the back of the cabinet.
At It's Design, our pull-out shelves are designed as wire baskets and mesh baskets. They are delivered complete with runners, so the basket and fittings are made to fit together from the start. This solution is especially useful in kitchen cabinets where you want better overview and more accessible storage.
Pull-out shelf or pull-out drawer – which should you choose?
The main difference is the base and the intended use. A wire basket or mesh basket is open and airy, making it easy to see the contents and quickly get an overview. It is well suited for pots, pans, cleaning products, bottles and other items where open storage works well.
A pull-out drawer, on the other hand, has a solid base and is better for keeping smaller items in place, as they may otherwise fall through a wire basket. If you want to store smaller products, dry goods or kitchen utensils, a pull-out drawer for kitchen cabinets may be a better choice.
Which sizes are available?
The width is chosen according to the internal measurements of the cabinet. Our wire baskets and pull-out shelves are available in several widths to fit common kitchen cabinet sizes. The Pelly Bac wire basket, for example, is designed for 600 mm cabinets, while the Pelly Mesh Basket and Linfalk’s complete wire baskets with runners are available in several different widths.
Always measure the inside of the cabinet before ordering. It is important that the basket fits properly and can run freely without scraping against the cabinet sides. Also check the cabinet depth and any hinges, pipes or other details that may affect installation.
What are soft-closing runners?
Soft-closing runners slow the basket down during the final part of closing, so it closes quietly and smoothly instead of slamming shut. This gives a more pleasant everyday feel and is especially appreciated in kitchens where the cabinets are used often.
Several models, including Linfalk’s pull-out chrome wire basket, are supplied with soft-closing runners. Other models have standard runners. Choose soft-closing if you want a quieter and more controlled closing function.
How to install a pull-out shelf in a kitchen cabinet
The wire baskets are mounted at the bottom of the cabinet and are delivered with matching runners, so you do not need to buy runners separately. The runners are mounted in the cabinet base, and the basket is then fitted according to the product’s installation instructions.
Linfalk’s models also include fittings for optional front mounting, if you want the basket to pull out together with a cabinet door. The pull-out shelves can be used in both base cabinets and tall cabinets, provided that the internal cabinet measurements match the chosen model.
Keep the basket organised with dividers and accessories
An open wire basket can easily be combined with dividers to create better structure. This is especially practical if you want to store bottles, cleaning products or other items that can easily tip over or move around when the basket is pulled out.
Pelly dividers for mesh baskets are designed to fit the mesh baskets and are available in both white and anthracite grey. With dividers, you can create fixed compartments and adapt the storage to the contents. If you want to organise more parts of the kitchen cabinet, pull-out shelves can also be combined with kitchen carousel solutions for corner cabinets.
