Choosing Kitchen Handles

Time to choose handles for your kitchen? When selecting the size of your new kitchen handles, it is important to keep track of three key measurements. Here are some basic terms to help you understand what to look for when reading product specifications in the store.

Center to Center (CC measurement) - the distance from the CENTER of one screw hole to the CENTER of the other screw hole. This is the standard industry measurement for cabinet handles. Knowing the CC measurement is useful for understanding your existing hole measurements, as well as knowing what measurement to drill when it's time to mount the new handles.

CC measurements are usually divisible by the wood industry standard of 32, and examples of such CC measurements are 96 mm, 160 mm, 192 mm, 352 mm, 416 mm, 480 mm, 512 mm, and 576 mm. However, there are exceptions, especially for longer measurements such as 476 mm, 676 mm, and 776 mm.

Total Length - the distance from one end of the handle to the other end. This measurement is always larger than the center to center measurement. Even if a handle has a CC measurement of 326 mm and that's what you want, you should account for what is called an "overhang." The material of the fitting has varying lengths of overhang beyond the hole, and the total measurement gives the overall sense of how large the handle appears on your door or drawer front.

For example, a handle with a 384 mm CC measurement might have a total length of 452 mm. The fitting then has an overhang of 68 mm beyond the hole measurement, and it will appear as 452 mm wide on the door instead of 384 mm. This is especially important for long handles, as you don't want the handle to be wider than the drawer front.

Height - measures how far the handle protrudes from the surface of the cabinet door or drawer after installation. It is always good to check the height because a handle that is too high might hit the wall or adjacent doors, while a handle that is too low might make it difficult to fit your fingers if you have larger hands.
